Although the Trout (and Salmon!) seasons have now ended, Grayling can be targeted right through until the end of the course season next March.
The River Tees hosts a strong grayling population, particularly in Cotherstone, where fish 14″ and bigger are not uncommon. Nymphing, whether fishing the duo or a couple of nymphs under an indicator, is a highly effective method. Focus on fast, well-oxygenated water with a good depth. Don’t neglect the shallows, you may find fish in as little as 12″ of water.
Throughout October and into November, we’ve been treated to relatively good water levels, not too high, not low – just right. As always when fishing the River Tees, please check the water level here before fishing. Anything in the high 60’s to 70cm+ isn’t good. Wading in the Tees can be treacherous at the best of times. We recommend a tethered wading stick whenever wading and a lifejacket.
