About the Club

We’re a small fishing club for fly fishing (only) on the River Tees & Balder. Based in the idyllic parish of Cotherstone, we offer annual membership to village residents, past or present & member accompanied guest day tickets for their family & friends. Associate membership is available for those living outside of the Parish (get in touch for more info). We have fishing rights on approximately 2 miles of the River Tees & River Balder.

Membership

We’re a small fishing club for fly only fishing on the Tees & Balder. Fishing stretches roughly 2 miles on the Tees & Balder.

Joining Us

Cotherstone fly fishing club is open to Cotherstone Parish residents, both past and present. Associate membership (Associate members may not hold office or a committee seat and have non-voting membership) is also available to those from outside the village.

Fees

Full, senior and associate membership – £70
Junior membership (under 18’s) – £15
Member accompanied guest/day tickets – £10

All included with salmon fishing on Wodencroft water

Membership subscriptions are due at the AGM each March. Those who fail to pay on or 30 days thereafter shall cease to be a member of the club.


Maps & Beats & Parking

Some notes on River Balder access:

  • North bank only, from viaduct upstream for 5 fields to marker on tree close to river.
  • Parking – On roadside 30 yards past railway or on grass to the left side of West End Farm road, twenty yards from the farm buildings. (Club I.D. disc must be displayed on windscreen)
  • River access from West End, on foot, through farmyard between buildings and house and through gate. Keep left to second gate on left and follow track down to the river. Upper limit is 150 yards upstream.
  • River access from Briscoe Road, on foot, along railway track and across viaduct, step over plain wire at end of bridge stonework on the left then fisherman’s stile into wood. 

Club Rules

  • Members shall do as little damage as possible to the river banks and to the land of the tenants adjoining such river banks. 
  • Members shall fish by fly rod and line angling only, with a landing net as an auxiliary thereto.
  • Artificial fly fishing only is permitted. 
  • No member shall remove or kill more than six fish in any one day; not remove or kill any fish measuring less than twelve inches from the snout to the fork of the tail; shall abide by any applicable rules or orders imposed by the environment agency.
  • Each member shall so far as possible assist in preventing poaching or trespassing in the club’s water or fishing other than artificial fly. 
  • The Trout season shall start on the 22nd March and close on the 30th September or inline with Environment Agency dates if these differ.
  • The Grayling season shall start on the 16th June and close on the 14th March or inline with Environment Agency dates if these differ.
